We’ve introduced a new “serve yourself” lunch system for upper-grade students! Launched in Budapest’s 18th district, this Swedish-inspired concept encourages students to respect their food, helps reduce food waste, and aims to increase participation in school meals.
The program kicked off in May 2023 at Kondor Béla Elementary School for the upper-grade students. Before each meal, our staff place sample portions of the day’s menu. Students can choose between two menu options and serve themselves at two separate stations, which shortens waiting times and leaves more room to enjoy their meals during the short lunch breaks.
Any uneaten food after 2:00 PM is available for students to enjoy as a second helping, further reducing food waste.
Since its introduction, this innovative approach has been a resounding success, delighting both students and staff alike.
