- Try eating your lunch with your eyes closed.
- Try navigating a one-centimeter step in a wheelchair.
- Try giving your full attention to someone who is hearing impaired and wants to communicate with you—no distractions, no scrolling, no looking around.
- Try stepping into a world governed by entirely different rules, 24 hours a day.
December 3 marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. In Újbuda, children attending the Világnyitók event had the opportunity to reflect on this important day through a playful, awareness-raising program organized by the Nem Adom Fel Foundation—held one day before the official date.
The foundation conveyed powerful messages with joy, openness, and authenticity—not only to the ten-year-olds who participated, but to us as well.
For us adults, the experience was just as inspiring as it was for the children. We arrived to volunteer and support the program—yet in many ways, we were the ones who gained the most.
It was deeply human and profoundly moving to witness the honesty with which people with disabilities shared their stories, the insightful realizations of fourth-grade students, and how naturally understanding and acceptance emerged by the end of the day. When you experience these perspectives firsthand, empathy becomes self-evident.
Thank you for the experience.
